Shodokan is a system of aikido devised by Kenji Tomiki. Tomiki sensei was an accomplished judoka and student of the founder of judo, Jigoro Kano. Tomiki then studied aikido under the founder of aikido, Morihei Ueshiba. He used the basic principles he learned from Kano’s instruction to deconstruct and systemitize the highly complex teachings of Ueshiba. Furthermore, he applied the spirit of competition to test the application of Ueshiba’s techniques. For this reason, shodokan aikido can be practiced both as a sport and as a martial art.
